I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all students and families.  I look forward to settling back into routine with all learners.

Here are a few points of information pertaining to the week ahead:

  • First Day of School after the Holiday Break:  The first day of school in the New Year will be Monday, January 6th, 2020.
  • Leader/Assistant:  Our leader will be Elliot and our assistant will be Gaia this week.
  • Theme:  Our theme will be Winter Sports this week and next.  We will also touch on Winter Clothing and Family once again.
  • Food Services:  The next deadline to order from Sherwood School’s Food Services is Sunday, January 5th at 9:00 am.
  • Book Exchange:  Our next book exchange will be on Wednesday, January 8th, Day 4.  Please have your child return his/her Library book(s) by or on Tuesday, January 7th, Day 3.  Please also note that if your child has an overdue Library book, he/she will not be able to sign out another book until the overdue book is returned.
  • Show and Share:  Students are invited to bring a small toy of their choice from home for Show and Share on Friday, January 10th.  This week, please help your child introduce himself/herselfname the object and identify the colour of the object in French.  The following sentence structures may be helpful to your child:  Bonjour!  Je m’appelle _____.  Voici un/une _____ (name of object).  C’est  _____ (colour).  Merci!
  • Scholastic Reading Club:  If you wish to place an order for your child from January’s Scholastic Reading Club catalogue, please have him/her return his/her paper flyer order form by or on Monday, January 13th.  Payment can be made by cheque, made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.  Parents/Guardians can also pay online by visiting Scholastic Canada’s website at www.scholastic.ca.
  • Home and School Meeting:  Sherwood School’s next Home and School meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 14th at 7:00 pm in the school’s Library.

Monday, December 16th, 2019 – Day 3

I would like to extend warm wishes for the Holiday season to all students and families.  I look forward to settling back into routine upon our return to school in the New Year!

Here are a few points of information pertaining to the week ahead.  It is going to be a very busy one!

Holiday Spirit Week:

This week, our class will be participating in a Holiday Spirit Week.  We will be celebrating the upcoming Holiday season in a special way each day.

Monday, December 16th:

  • Instead of saying Bonjour! or Au revoir!, students are invited to say HO!  HO!  HO!.  Students are also invited to wear a SANTA HAT, if they have one.
  • Our class will be making a HOLIDAY CRAFT.

Tuesday, December 17th:

  • Students are invited to lend a HELPING HAND to other classmates.
  • Our class will also be attending our school’s bi-monthly KINDNESS ASSEMBLY.

Wednesday, December 18th:

  • Students are invited to wear their PAJAMAS and bring a STUFFED TOY to school.
  • Our class will also be watching a short CHRISTMAS MOVIE in the Library.

Thursday, December 19th: 

  • Students are invited to bring their favourite English or French BOOK to share with their book buddy.

Friday, December 20th:

  • Holiday Dress-Up Day:  Students are invited to wear RED, GREEN OR WHITE in celebration of the upcoming Holiday season.
  • Skating:  Our class will be going SKATING at the Cody Banks Arena from 8:45 – 9:45 am as part of our Physical Education curriculum for the first time this year.  Parents/Guardians, please join us to help tie skates and enjoy a skate with our class.  Please note that helmets are mandatory for every person on the ice, including students, chaperones and teachers.  We will be leaving the school at 8:35 am and will meet all parents/guardians at the Cody Banks Arena at 8:45 am.  If your child is transporting his/her skates by bus, they must be carried in an enclosed kitbag.  Thank you in advance for your help!
  • Hot Chocolate Party:  Our class will be celebrating the upcoming Holiday season by enjoying a mug of HOT CHOCOLATE and RICE KRISPIE TREAT upon our return to the school after skating.
  • Sing-Along:  Our class will be attending Sherwood School’s annual Holiday Sing-Along for Grades Kindergarten to 3 at 1:30 pm.

Here are a few points of information pertaining to the week ahead:

  • Leader/Assistant:  Our leader will be Brenda-Ryan and our assistant will be Elliot this week.
  • Theme:  Our theme will be Christmas again this week.  We will also touch on Winter Clothing and Family again.
  • Library Books:  Please have your child return all of his/her Library book(s) by or on Monday, December 16th, Day 3.  Our next book exchange will not be until the New Year.  Merci!
  • Candy Grams:  Mme Beck’s Grade 5 French Immersion class is fundraising for families in need in our community.  They will still be selling Christmas candy grams until Tuesday, December 17th for a $1.00 each.  Candy grams will be delivered to students from Wednesday, December 18th – Friday, December 20th and will consist of a small treat with a note attached.  Please complete the note sent home in your child’s zippered bag and return it, along with $1.00, in a baggie, clearly labelled with your child’s name on it, if you wish to send your child a candy gram.
  • Bake Sale:  Mrs. Murphy’s Grade 6 English class will be holding a Bake Sale on Wednesday, December 18th to raise money for families in need.  All baked good will be peanut/nut free and will be sold for $0.75 eachGluten free sweets will also be available.  Please send money in a baggie, clearly labelled with your child’s name on it, if your child wishes to make a purchase from the bake sale.
  • Show and Share:  We will not be having Show and Share on Friday, December 20th.
  • Last Day of School before the Holiday Break:  Please note that Friday, December 20th will be the last day of school before the Holiday Break.  The first day of school in the New Year will be Monday, January 6th, 2020.

Monday, December 9th, 2019 – Day 4

With only two weeks of school to go before our upcoming Holiday Break, things are in full swing in KC!

Homework:

  • Family Photograph:  Please send in a family photograph with your child by Friday, December 13th.  Please print the photograph, in black and white, on white paper so that your child can cut and paste it.  Please do not send in an original!  Merci beaucoup!
  • Christmas Ball Ornament:  It is that time of year for another seasonal home project!  Your child will be bringing home a picture of a Christmas Ball Ornament on Monday, December 3rd.  Please have your child cut it out.  Your child is now ready to decorate the Christmas Ball Ornament any way he/she likes.  Please have your child use decorations you already have at home, for example, bows, ribbon, stickers, tissue paper or wrapping paper.  If your child chooses to use food products, please ensure they are PEANUT/NUT FREE.  Please have your child bring his/her decorated Christmas Ball Ornament back to school by Friday, December 13th. Thank you for supporting your child.  I hope you have fun together, getting ready getting into the Holiday spirit.

  • Free Milk Day:  The P.E.I. School Milk Foundation Ltd. will be sponsoring a Free Milk Day at Sherwood School on Wednesday, December 11th.  All students in our class will receive a white or chocolate milk free of charge, as per his/her request.
  • Christmas Themed Kindergarten Classroom Rotation:  On Thursday, December 12th, our class will be participating in a Christmas Themed Kindergarten Classroom Rotation with students from each of the other English and French Immersion Kindergarten classes.  Students from our class will be grouped with students from the other classes and rotate through a variety of 5 different activities, one in each of the classrooms.
  • Christmas Spirit Day:  On Friday, December 13th, all students of Sherwood School are invited to dress up in Christmas or winter attire in exchange for a small monetary donation.  Students can come dressed up as a Christmas character (an elf, a reindeer, Santa or the Grinch), in Holiday colours (green, red or white) or as a winter character (a penguin, a snowflake or a snowman), for example.  Funds raised will be donated to those in need.
  • Show and Share:  To complement this week’s integrated theme of Christmas, all students are invited to bring a small object of their choice, that relates to our theme, from home for Show and Share on Friday, December 13th.  This week, please help your child introduce himself/herselfname the object and identify the colour of the object in French.  The following sentence structures may be helpful to your child:  Bonjour!  Je m’appelle _____.  Voici un/une _____ (name of object).  C’est  _____ (colour).  Merci!

  • Scholastic Book Fair:  Sherwood School’s first Scholastic Book Fair of the year will be held in the library from Monday, November 4th until Friday, November 8th. The fair will be open from 8:45 am until 2:40 pm on Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th for students to browse through the selection of books.  On Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th, the fair will be open from 8:45 am until 2:40 pm for students to purchase books.  Our class will be purchasing books on Wednesday, November 6th.   If your child wishes to make a purchase, please send money with him/her in a zippered sandwich baggie, clearly labelled with his/her name and the amount of money enclosed on the baggie.  Please also enclose your child’s “wish list” in the baggie.  Don’t forget to circle the title(s) of the book(s) your child would like to buy.  The fair will be open from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on the evening of Thursday, November 7th and from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon on the morning of Friday, November 8th for families.
  • Remembrance Day Assembly:  Our class will be attending Sherwood School’s annual Remembrance Day assembly, performed by the Grade 4 students, on Thursday, November 7th at 10:30 am.
  • Show and Share:  Students are invited to bring a small toy of their choice from home for Show and Share on Thursday, November 7th.  This week, please help your child introduce himself/herself and identify the colour of his/her toy in French.  The following sentence structures may be helpful to your child:  Bonjour!  Je m’appelle _____.  C’est  _____ (colour).  Merci!
  • Parent-Teacher Interviews:  Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held at Sherwood School during the late afternoon and early evening of Thursday, November 7th as well as during the morning and afternoon of Friday, November 8th.  I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress on these dates.
  • PD Day:  Please note that there will not be any classes for students on Friday, November 8th due to-Teacher Interviews.
  • Remembrance Day:  Please note that there will not be any classes for students on Monday, November 11th, Remembrance Day.
  • Home and School Meeting:  Sherwood School’s next Home and School meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00 pm in the school’s Library.

Monday, October 28th, 2019 – Day 4

Here are a few points of information pertaining to the week ahead.:

  • Leader/Assistant:  Our leader will be Lucas and our assistant will be Mia this week.
  • Theme:  Our theme will be Halloween this week.
  • Foreseen Change in End-of-Day Routine:  Please write me a note in your child’s communication duo-tang indicating the foreseen change in your child’s end-of-day routine.
  • Unforeseen Change in End-of-Day Routine:  Please call me at the school at (902) 368-6780 to inform me of the unforeseen change in your child’s end-of-day routine.
  • Food Services:  The next deadline to order from Sherwood School’s Food Services is Sunday, October 27th at 9:00 am.  Please note that the order deadline will be the SUNDAY prior to the 2 week order cycle at 9:00 am from now on.
  • Book Exchange:  Our next book exchange will be on Monday, October 28th, Day 4.  Please have your child return his/her Library book by or on that date.  Merci!
  • Lifetouch Portrait Order:  Please have your child return his/her paper Lifetouch portrait order form and payment by or on Wednesday, October 30th, if you wish to place an order through the school.
  • Portrait Retakes:  Lifetouch portrait retakes will be taken on Wednesday, October 30th as well.  Please have your child return the Lifetouch order form, indicating that you would like your him/her to have retakes taken, by or on Wednesday, October 30th.
  • Halloween Themed Kindergarten Classroom Rotation:  On Wednesday, October 30th, our class will be participating in a “Halloween Themed Kindergarten Classroom Rotation” with students from each of the other English and French Immersion Kindergarten classes.  Students from our class will be grouped with students from the other classes and rotate through a variety of 5 different activities, one in each of the classrooms.
  • UPEI School of Nursing Students:  Our class is pleased to welcome two second year students from the UPEI School of Nursing into our classroom.  They will be observing our class on Wednesday, October 30th, Thursday, October 31st, Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th..  On Wednesday, November 20th, they will be running a Teddy Bear Clinic for our class.
  • Halloween Costumes:  On Thursday, October 31st, all students of Sherwood School are invited to dress up in their Halloween costume!  Please have your child wear his/her costume to school.  Students will change out of their costume before going outside for recess at 11:15 am.  Please pack a change of clothes in your child’s backpack.  For safety reasons, please do not include a mask or weapon as a part of your child’s costume.  Please also keep small costume accessories at home as they may get broken or lost at school.  It is going to be a fun day!
  • Spooktacular:  On Thursday, October 31st, our class will be participating in Sherwood School’s annual Spooktacular.  Spooktacular consists of Halloween themed stations, held in the gymnasium.
  • Halloween Party:  Our class will be celebrating Halloween on Thursday, October 31st by playing BINGO and enjoying an orange and noir SNACK.  Your child is also welcome to bring a snack that is packaged individually and labelled as Peanut/Nut Free to share with his/her classmates for our celebration.  Please do not send candy with your child, though!  Merci beaucoup!
  • Show and Share:  To complement this week’s integrated theme of “Halloween”, all students are invited to bring a small orange et/ou noir object of their choice from home for Show and Share on Friday, November 1st.  This week, please help your child identify the colour of his/her object in French.  The following sentence structures may be helpful to your child:  Bonjour!  Je m’appelle _____.  C’est  _____ (colour).  Merci!
  • Absence:  Unfortunately, I will be absent on Friday, November 1st.  Madame Denise Uyterlinde will be replacing me for the day.
  • Scholastic Reading Club:  If you wish to place an order for your child from November’s Scholastic Reading Club catalogue, please have him/her return his/her paper flyer order form by or on Monday, November 4th.  Payment can be made by cheque, made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.  Parents/Guardians can also pay online by visiting Scholastic Canada’s website at www.scholastic.ca.

Your child could also wear splash pants and rain boots on days that the ground is wet so that he/she does not get his/her clothes too wet or even muddy on the school yard.

Monday, October 21st, 2019 – Day 5

Here are a few points of information pertaining to the week ahead:

  • Leader/Assistant:  Our leader will be Lily and our assistant will be Lucas this week.
  • Theme:  Our theme will be Apples this week.
  • Peanut/Nut Free School:  Please ensure your child’s snack and lunch are peanut/nut free and do not contain traces of peanuts/nuts either.  Sherwood School is a peanut/nut free school so as to provide a safe learning environment for all students.  
  • School Library Week:  Sherwood School will be celebrating School Library Week from Monday, October 21st until Friday, October 25th.  This is a week dedicated to celebrating school libraries on PEI.
  • Show and Share:  To complement our current Math unit on Exploring Patterns, all students are invited to bring another pattern for Show and Share on Friday, October 25th.  Students can create a pattern using small objects (for example, Lego brick – marble, Lego brick – marble, Lego brick – marble) or can choose a pattern that already exists (for example, on a t-shirt).  Please note that we learned that the elements of a pattern repeat at least 3 times.  The following sentence structures may be helpful to your child to describe the elements of his/her pattern in French: Bonjour! Je m’appelle _____.  Voici ma régularité.  C’est _____ (AB, AAB, BBA or ABC).  Merci!
  • Annual Fall Clean-Up:  Sherwood School’s Greening and Grounds Committee will be hosting an annual Fall Clean-Up on Friday, October 25th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  All family members are welcome to join them for a half hour or even an hour to help prepare the school grounds for winter’s arrival.  Please have your child return the form that will be sent home with him/her on Monday, October 21st by Thursday, October 24th.  Merci beaucoup!

  • Donations of Plastic Shopping Bags:  Does your family have a surplus of plastic shopping bags?  If so, please consider donating a few to our Kindergarten classroom so that we can reuse them!  At times, plastic shopping bags come in very handy!

  • Recycling Account at Charlottetown Bottle & Metal:  Sherwood School’s Greening and Grounds Committee has an account at Charlottetown Bottle & Metal (http://www.ctownbottlemetal.ca).  All families are welcome to drop off refundable items there to be credited to the school’s account.  Charlottetown Bottle & Metal is located at 4 MacAleer Drive.  Funds raised are used to support the maintenance of the school’s grounds and the committee’s project!
